This fact makes acquiring Bitcoins a rather obnoxious affair, with one party or the other having to give tremendous trust to the other. I recently tried to buy a moderate number of Bitcoins on one of the trading facilitators, Bitcoinary, and ran into this head on

One says it takes an entire backpack, all the weight a man can carry to back them up and transport them.
That's pure bullshit.
You can encrypt them and email them to yourself. Or you can store them on a thumb drive, or a camera's memory card, or in your phone, or print your wallet onto a sheet of paper, which can be scanned back via your smart phone.
Another says you can store gold and maintain real estate on-line.
Another says we should be afraid that the entire Internet will cease to exist.
Others just resort to name-calling

There was a great piece in the satirical news source The Onion a few years ago in which it “reported” that Fed chairman Ben Bernanke experienced a moment of existential panic during a congressional hearing as he paused, shook his head, and said, “It’s just an illusion . . . Just look at it: meaningless pieces of paper with numbers printed on them. Worthless”
Sayeth the Onion headline: “U.S. Economy Grinds to Halt As Nation Realizes Money Just A Symbolic, Mutually Shared Illusion”
Which brings us to bitcoin. It is a digital currency, which a certain variety of techno-utopian futurist crowd views as a form of money unencumbered by the shackles of privacy-reducing international anti-money laundering laws and inflation-tolerant central banks
