Mobile Bitcoin wallet iOS

Tech giant Apple has historically not been a fan of Bitcoin and the removal of popular Bitcoin wallets like Coinbase has made that apparent. Apple has now removed Blockchain, the last remaining wallet, from the iOS app store, citing an "unresolved issue." Blockchain, however, is stating that Apple never complained about the app in the past. Now that Blockchain has been removed from the app store, the only Bitcoin-related applications that are still available for download are information-based. This means that Apple has removed the ability for someone to use an app to control his Bitcoin wallet and pay for items online, in physical stores, or transfer coins to other individuals.

Anti-Bitcoin

Blockchain has long been one of the most popular Bitcoin wallet applications and for many people, the ability to use it on nearly every platform made accessing their Bitcoins a viable option for payments. While fans of the digital currency have been complaining about Apple's stance toward Bitcoin for quite some time, the removal of the last wallet for iOS has angered far more people.

“These actions by Apple once again demonstrate the anti-competitive and capricious nature of the App Store policies, ” said Blockchain in a blog post on its Web site. "The Blockchain application is the same one that has been on the App Store for two years, with more than 120, 000 downloads, no customer complaints, and a broad user base."

Helping Android

Since Apple began taking down Bitcoin applications from the app store, many users have pointed out that Google's Android OS is a better option for people interested in using Bitcoin. Unlike Apple, Google has yet to make any moves against the currency and instead, there are rumors that it has even considered integrating Bitcoin as a payment option.

In it's post on Thursday, Blockchain also noted that Android seems to be conducive to Bitcoin whereas Apple and iOS are not. "The response of users to the restrictions placed on Bitcoin applications have led thousands to flee to Google’s Android mobile OS, which offers a much more open environment for innovation, ” according to the Blockchain post.

We asked Jinyoung Englund, Director of Public Affairs for the Bitcoin Foundation, if Android is becoming the superior mobile platform for Bitcoin users now that Blockchain and other Bitcoin wallets are nowhere to be found on iOS. She told us that while it is possible that the removal of Blockchain may not have anything to do with Bitcoin itself, Android is indeed turning into the better OS for people who like to use the digital currency.
