Last night Apple removed the most popular bitcoin mobile application from its App Store without reason. Blockchain, a major service provider for digital currency, is said to house more than 1 million users worldwide. Software updates through Apple will also be halted for the time being.No official word has been given by Apple on the reason behind pulling Blockchain from its app marketplace. Blockchain CEO Nicolas Cary reached out to WIRED with a copy of the email he received from Apple. It read that the app had been “removed from the App Store due to an unresolved issue.”

Some think the popular digital currency app got pulled because it is a “threat” to what Apple wants to do in the future with mobile payments. It’s been rumored that Apple is working hard behind the scenes to offer its own mobile payment service, making its new iBeacon platform just a proxy for that plan. Blockchain’s Cary thinks Apple is readying for its own mobile payments system. “I think that Apple is positioning itself to take on mobile payments in a way they haven’t described to the public and they’re being anti-competitive.”

You can be assured that Apple will soon come out with an explanation for yanking Blockchain from its App Store. Any speculation that Blockchain’s removal from the App Store was somehow due to its future mobile payments ambition is laughable, as other digital currency apps like ZeroBlock and Feed Tracker remain in Apple’s app marketplace.
