To further evidence how meaningless their positions are,The Bank of Israel (BoI) and the Israeli Ministry of Finance got together to issue a statement “regarding possible risks in decentralized virtual currencies (such as Bitcoin).” We should probably be grateful that they did not decide to regulate any digital currency,but the risks outlined in the statement can be found simply by Googling the term “Bitcoin risk”.
The document talks about how anonymous transfers can lead to fraud and make it difficult to track down illegal activities,such as theft. They also talk about price volatility and the fact that it is not backed by a central government could cause Bitcoin to fold at any minute. An Israeli taxpayer would be right to question why these people are getting paid to write such a silly and obvious document.
The overarching tone of the document is not that people interested in Bitcoin should be aware of the risks,but more that citizens should not be interested in digital currency. Little do they know that by acknowledging Bitcoin and its inherent risks,it serves to legitimize Bitcoin as a currency. The more governments look at and react to Bitcoin,more mainstream citizens across the globe will recognize what Bitcoin is and the power that it holds.
