Bitcoin has set a new trend for virtual currency and its younger brother, Litecoin, which is based on the same system as Bitcoin in terms of protocol and peer-to-peer network in transferring the money between computers, is currently under hacker attack. A new malicious software, detected by ESET as MSIL/PSW.LiteCoin.A, has begun circulation among Litecoin users, being especially designed to infect Windows computers and steal your virtual money.

The respective malware is programmed to steal all ”wallet.dat” files and transmit them to a hacker controlled FTP server. This attack was fastly exposed and even the FTP server provider has gained awareness on the issue and is now displaying the following text on the hacker’s online corner: “User (blurred name) form BTC-E exchange uses this ftp address to steal wallets from cryptocoiners. BEWARE!”

Luckily for virtual money lovers, in case of losing the respective file, they can still remain calm because the hacked would still need their password in order to their online piggybank, thanks to Litecoin’s software application – Litecoin-Qt, that permits users to encrypt their virtual wallets.

This malicious software is considered rare by Robert Lipovsky, ESET security researcher: “According to our telemetry, Win32/PSW.LiteCoin.A is not very widespread at the moment, but Litecoin may become a target for attackers as its popularity and userbase increases.”
