By Ryan Nill The cryptocurrency community is a highly resilient one, chiefly due to its decentralized and cooperative nature. This is evidenced by situations such as when Charlie Lee and Warren Togami, developers of Litecoin, fixed a bug that would have crashed the Bitcoin Mac OS client. Or when exchange operators, wallet developers, and core developers joined forces to deal with recent transaction malleability bugs, whether they were personally affected or not. Cryptocurrency encourages features such as the open source development model, network consensus protocols, and democratic software version adoption, which foster community acceptance and buy-in from users who all participate voluntarily. Cryptocurrencies are not the only economic agents that exhibit decentralized cooperation. In seeking out other such like-minded economic agents and interfacing with them, all involved can mutually benefit from increases in the anti-fragility and resilience of our communities. There are parallel, transcendental moments in the histories of both biology and computer science. Both were once dominated by centralized individual agents that created code, and in both cases there was a point when large groups of individual agents decentralized and gave the ability to create newer, more stable code to a smaller subset of agents. In biology this moment was the creation of multi-cellular organisms from single-celled organisms. In computer science it was the creation of large open source projects such as Linux and Bitcoin. Multicellularity features the Economics 101 concept of specialization and trade. One theory of the origins of multicellularity assumes that cell colonies in harsh environments specialized so that they wouldn’t have to individually accomplish all necessary life activities to survive. Such a strategy provides the same amount of utility to all the cells but for less overall effort. Multicellularity requires that all the cells join in a cooperative group venture, giving up some things and gaining others. Neighbors take care of various functions that an individual cell may not be able to accomplish on its own, while the multicellular community gains emergent properties that would have been otherwise impossible. Analogously, open source developers often give up wages and the ability to publish definitive updates in order to get the emergent product: an organically evolving piece of software.
