Below is a list of solutions to common problems and answers to common questions related to the Bitcoin Client and Armory Client.

Updating my Bitcoin client takes a very long time.

All transactions in the Bitcoin network, old and recent, are stored in a file that is called the blockchain. Every full client on the network has a copy of this file. With it, every client can check the value associated with every address. This is essential for the functioning of the network. More information on the blockchain and it purpose can be found here.

As the blockchain grows with every transaction the size of the blockchain has increased significantly over the years. Bitcoin Armory needs a local full node, the Bitcoin client software, to function properly. The process can be accelerated by bootstrapping the blockchain. A tutorial on how to do this is provided here.

Systime1Bitcoin Armory stays in offline mode.

Bitcoin Armory needs the Bitcoin Client software to connect to the Bitcoin network. It does this by a local socket connection, called an RPC connection. Add bitcoin-qt.exe to your firewall exception list if you have a firewall installed. If you have edited your bitcoin.conf file in the past, enable server mode or delete the config file to have it regenerated. Go to the data directory of the Bitcoin client and delete the bitcoin.conf file. Then restart the client. Do not delete the wallet.dat file!

Bitcoin Armory cannot send or receive transactions even while online and connected to the Bitcoin Client.

Check if you have a wallet set-up in the Armory Client. The client should show a wallet ID and name at the arrow in the below window. Armory needs a wallet set-up to receive and send funds. Either generate a wallet or import an existing one.

The Bitcoin Client displays an error regarding system time and date or Armory freezes on first launch.

If the local clock is too far behind or ahead of the network then the Bitcoin client can give you an error like this:

Warning: Check your system data and time, you may not be able to generate or receive the most recent blocks! To get back into sync with the network is easy. The clock has to be synced.

For Windows users:

Then click internet time, change settings, tick the synchronize box, select the time.windows.com server in the dropdown list and press update.
